Odds & Ends 7/17-7/23

Well, with one week left, it’s looking less and less likely that I’ll hit my word count goal for this month. I’m not taking it too hard, though. I set an ambitious goal (basically calculated hitting my peak work pace every single day) for July, and I’ve had some very productive days, and I hope to have a few more in this next week, resulting in a very respectable total. Maybe I’ll set the same goal for August and see if I can get a little closer the second time around!

I spent the vast majority of today working out a brief history of the world in my current fantasy project, which was fun. I must admit, though, this part of the process also causes me angst because it is so much time and thought, but only a fraction of it will actually be in the book. Like an iceberg, what you see above the water (or on the page) is just the tip; below the surface is an entire unseen mountain of details that helped the author figure out why their world works and how each character behaves.

No wonder J.K. Rowling keeps coming out with more Harry Potter plays and websites and movies.

In other exciting news, I FINALLY won a Goodreads giveaway! Sometime in the next month or so I will be coming home to a happy little bonus book sitting in my mailbox. I can’t wait!

  1. Congrats on being productive, even if it didn’t get you your word count!
Knowing how much backstory/worldbuilding to include is tricky! I’ve been working in historical fiction so I kept finding facts that are AWESOME… and have nothing to do with the story. I make up for the disappointment by explaining all of the minutia to my hubby, which I’m sure he loves 😉

  2. Thanks! I can’t imagine how hard it is sifting through all those great details for historical fiction with so many sources available. Thank goodness for those sympathetic ears in our lives!
